This does not seem to be happening with any regularity - closing.
Closed in favour of new issue #2009 since some of the issues here are now fixed.
This also applies to backpacks with items in them, but only after you remove all the items. If you leave at least one item in the backpack it can continue to be used as a backpack.

Server issues have hopefully been resolved.
THis isn't an issue specific to the grid it was due to some server issues which are hopefully resolved.
